Why Exhibits Are Their Own Skill
The interviewer is watching you extract insight — not read numbers aloud
What clearing a chart actually tests
Mid-case, the interviewer slides an exhibit across the table. They're testing whether you can orient quickly, find the story in the data, and say what it means for the client — under time pressure. Reading the numbers back is table stakes; the score comes from the "so what".
This is distinct from the mental maths on the Quant page. There, you're calculating. Here, you're interpreting — deciding what the chart is telling you and how it moves the case forward. Strong candidates treat every exhibit as evidence for or against their hypothesis, not as a standalone puzzle.

The 5-Step Chart Read
A repeatable sequence for clearing any exhibit
- 1Orient before you analyse. Read the title, then the axes, units, legend, and time period — out loud, briefly. Getting the units wrong (millions vs thousands, % vs absolute) is the fastest way to derail. Take five seconds here before saying anything about the data.
- 2Describe what you see. State the high-level pattern: the trend, the biggest bar, the outlier, the crossover point. "Revenue grew steadily until 2023, then dropped sharply" — one clean sentence.
- 3Pull the specific insight. Go one level deeper into the driver: which segment, which year, which competitor is responsible for the pattern you just named.
- 4Link it to the case. Connect the exhibit to information you already have and to your hypothesis. Offer a second-order insight — what this implies when combined with what you learned earlier.
- 5Finish with the "so what". End on the implication for the client: what should they do differently because of what this chart shows? Never end on the number alone.
Silence is fine — briefly
It's expected to take 15–30 seconds to study an exhibit before speaking. Take the moment to orient properly rather than narrating confusedly in real time. Then deliver a structured read, not a stream of consciousness.

The Chart Types You'll Face
Know each one cold so orientation is instant
Marimekko ("Mekko")
A stacked bar where both width and height carry data — column width = segment/market size, stack height = share within that segment.
Look for: area = width × height. A tall slice in a narrow column can be smaller in absolute terms than a short slice in a wide one.
Waterfall
Shows how you get from a starting value to an ending value through a series of positive and negative steps.
Look for: the largest single bar — that's the biggest driver of the change, and usually where the case is heading.
Stacked & Clustered Bars
Stacked = composition of a total over time. Clustered = side-by-side comparison across categories or years.
Look for: which segment is growing vs shrinking as a share of the whole — mix shift is often the real insight.
Bubble / Scatter
Two axes plus bubble size = three variables at once (e.g. growth vs margin, sized by revenue).
Look for: the outliers and the quadrant each point sits in — top-right winners, bottom-left laggards.
Line / Trend
A metric over time, often several series compared on the same axes.
Look for: inflection points and crossovers — when the trend changed matters as much as the direction.
Data Table
Rows and columns of raw figures — the interviewer wants you to find the signal yourself.
Look for: compute a ratio or growth rate the table doesn't hand you — that's usually the point of giving you a table.
Two habits before touching the numbers
External to the chart: title, headers, footnotes, axes, units. Internal to the chart: segment sizes, totals, and what each dimension encodes. Do the external scan first — the footnote often changes everything (e.g. "excludes duty-free" or "constant 2024 currency").

Clearing it with the 5 steps
- 1Orient. "This is a profit bridge in euros, millions, from FY23 to FY24. Four movements: one positive, three negative."
- 2Describe. "Profit fell €300m overall. Volume growth added €180m, but that was more than wiped out by cost and pricing effects."
- 3Specific insight. "The single biggest driver is a €300m rise in input costs — larger than any other bar, and larger than the entire volume gain."
- 4Link. "Combined with the price investment of €180m, this tells me the client cut prices to defend volume while their costs were rising — a margin squeeze from both sides."
- 5So what. "So the priority isn't selling more — volume is already up. It's the cost base: I'd dig into what drove the €300m input-cost increase and whether the price cuts actually protected share."
The move that scores
A weak candidate says "profit went from 800 to 500." A strong one lands on "the cost base is the problem, not volume — here's where I'd look next." Same chart, completely different signal to the interviewer.

Four Mistakes That Sink Exhibit Reads
Each one is visible to the interviewer in seconds
- 1Diving into numbers before reading axes and units. Get the units wrong once and every conclusion that follows is wrong. Orient first, always.
- 2Reading data without extracting insight. Narrating every value with no synthesis signals you can't see the forest. Name the pattern, then the driver.
- 3Ignoring the footnotes. "Excludes X," "constant currency," "estimated" — these routinely change the interpretation and are placed there on purpose.
- 4Not tying back to the question. An insight that doesn't connect to the client's problem is trivia. Always close with the implication for the case.
